As the temperature drops in the upcoming winter season, we all know it’s best to get the de-icer and scraper out early, to be prepared for those frosty mornings and freezing evenings.
But how else should you prepare your vehicle for the upcoming winter months? We’ve put together some key elements of your vehicle that will need to be maintained in the coming months.
Check and change your oil and oil filter — This is important if your driving is mostly stop-and-go or consists of frequent short trips. The cooling system should be flushed and refilled as recommended. The level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically.
A 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water is usually recommended. WARNING: Always make sure that your engine is cool before attempting to refill your cooling system.
Check the heater and demister system – Make sure this is in good working condition to ensure that there is clear driver visibility.
Maintain your windscreen wipers – These can often become worn over time and are sometimes better being replaced in winter months to ensure that you can see through elements you are battling against.
Inspect all lights and bulbs – Replace burned out bulbs; periodically clean road grime from all lenses.
Have your brakes checked for safety – This is important, especially in the winter months.
Always carry an emergency kit with you – extra gloves, boots and blankets, a small shovel, a flashlight and extra batteries. It’s also advised that you put a few “high-energy” snacks in your glove box too, just in case.
